“Filipina Girl” sucks!

I first heard about the song “Filipina Girl” at my blogger of a friend Kuya Mon some weeks ago. With the Filipino pride surging heavily through me like when I was (and still am) proud with the likes of Charlie Green, Madonna Decena, Arnel Pineda of The Journey, and even the homegrown singer of a young lady Charice Pempengco, I immediately listened to the song.

First I must commend Marcus Davis, Jr. for having created a song like this one. He too is proud of his Filipino descent, primarily from that of her Filipino mother, whom he gallantly mentioned in the lyrics. But truth be told, I don’t like the song very much. Filipina Girl sucks! This can even be one of the reasons why I haven’t heard it on the local FM stations. Never ever.

The beat “Filipina Girl” has is quite chilling, but just that. The way words were said, most especially the Pinoy proper nouns, was of course twangy. And I hate it when foreigners can’t just mimic the way we use to pronounce our own words. Heck, we Filipinos know a lot of the diction and enunciation of English words, and why can’t some foreigners, especially the English-speaking ones, just copy the tone of our words?

Going back to the song, I’m giving Marcus a 1 and a half out of five for this. Maybe he can do it better? Hate me for all you can, but this tune just isn’t up to my taste. All the same, kudos to him for coming up with this encouraging, uplifting song, a tribute to all the Filipina girls out there. At least it will somehow assuage the ever-deteriorating Filipina image due to these Pinay scandals and Pinays having been constantly viewed as cheap from all these mail-ordered bride systems on the net.

I don’t intend to mean in the title that the Filipina girls suck, because Filipina women are beautiful, and deserve utmost respect just like any other woman in the world. The Filipina image may be tainted with some dirty reputations, but then again, we all get some bad image sometimes. And having a bad image does not necessarily mean bad for all time. It’s just an “image”. It can always be redeemed…
