A blanket ban for Wordpress blogs?

Wordpress blogs banned in Brazil

Wordpress blogs are banned in Brazil

Just because a Wordpress blogger who published a post featuring a YouTube video embed of a couple having sex, all Wordpress blogs are or will soon be banned in Brazil? This sounds super crazy and, well, unfair. Although I don’t quite often get visitors from the said country, I still don’t see it a just act, and being banned in Brazil can, still, in a way affect incoming traffic nonetheless.

I really couldn’t help but be curious when I saw in my Wordpress dashboard Lorelle’s post on Wordpress as banned again. I just have jumped from another blog provider to Wordpress and I was so struck with the headline mentioning the ban, fearing it will be worldwide. It is a relief that it is only in Brazil, this time, although in the past the same thing happened in China, Turkey and some other countries.

Why would every blogger using Wordpress platform suffer that national ban when that Brazilian judge, or the court, ruling against a Wordpress blogger can just put the punishment solely to him/her/it? And why, in all confusion, can’t the judge or the court just penalize the one who uploaded the sex video in YouTube? Or have YouTube kicked in the ass instead rather than Wordpress?

The banning of three million Wordpress blogs sounds totally pathetic, and dreaded. Lorelle is right, and I was struck by it, in saying:

Why aren’t we talking about this instead of the latest iPhone gizmo and useless SEO techniques? Why didn’t people get angry and protest loudly when WordPress.com blogs were banned in Turkey, China, and other countries? WordPress.com continues to be banned in places - why aren’t we talking about this? Have we really become desensitized to the plight of other bloggers and the oppression of freedom of speech?

Have your say, Wordpress bloggers! Blog about this issue, and shout to the world banning all Wordpress blogs in Brazil is mean and unjust. It is not right that we become spoiled just because of a couple of rotten bloggers. The one-bad-apple-doesn’t-spoil-the-whole-bunch principle does apply in this case. And as Lorelle put it, “You don’t send an entire city’s population to jail because two people break the law.”

It makes those Brazilians look stupid. Not that I’m discriminating or anything, but surely the authorities could’ve figured out a more democratic way to solve the problem. Jeesh.

correct! or they should run after YouTube itself, rather than Wordpress. or better yet the one who uploaded the video to YouTube. That’s more logical than running after all Wordpress bloggers, let alone the couple of idiots who embedded the video in their blog/s.

@Dean: I’m one of “those Brazilians” and I’m certainly not stupid.

@Zang Caesar: For some reason, this issue hasn’t been getting much attention from the press over here. Which is a weird fact, because Brazilian journalists tend to be very protective of our freedom of speech. Maybe they aren’t taking this story much seriously, i. e., they don’t think the ban will really happen. And neither do I, as a matter of fact.

in my own understanding, Dean just said “it ‘makes’ those Brazilians ‘look’ stupid”. Look, synonymous with seems and appear, does not make the word stupid definite. that’s how I understand it. and besides, he said he is not discriminating or what. Furthermore, by saying “those Brazilians” I don’t think he meant ALL Brazilians. I think he was just referring to the court or the judges… i know words can hurt but let us try to understand each other’s words. if we don’t, that makes the world a bitter world to live in. wars can begin… just a thought… i am not taking sides…

if the ban didn’t happen, then good… that’s a brave act and logical act I should credit to the Brazilian court. or perhaps this, along with other, posts about Wordpress blog ban have reached them? i hope so…
